Cool and Collected

Collecting pop culture toys, comics, and collectibles collections

February 7, 2014 By Brian 11 Comments

Well played Funko. Well played.

Entertainment Earth unveiled the first images of the new ReAction figures that Funko will be releasing this summer. We’ve heard what was coming, but this is the first time we’ve seen images. Funko did a great job with the Super7 Alien figures, but I wasn’t sure I wanted to collect a new line of toys — until I saw this…

The card art alone is worth the price — Just $9.99! I was afraid these would cost in the $20 range since they are “collectible” toys, but Funko priced these right, and I think I may be all in.

My current “must have” list based on the figures up for preorder at Entertainment Earth is as follows:

  • Escape from New York Snake Plissken
  • Terminator T-800 Leather Jacket
  • Firefly crew — Mal, Zoe, Wash, Jayne, and most definitely Kaylee
  • Rocketeer
  • Back to the Future – Marty and Doc
  • Pulp Fiction Jules and Vincent
  • Goonies kids and Sloth — but the kids have to be properly sized!
  • Freddy Krueger
  • Jason Vorhees
  • Michael Myers
I don’t have any action figures hanging on the wall, but I think the card art for these will certainly qualify as “pop art” and I might have to make an exception for these figures. Wait, that means I’m going to have to buy two of each. Well played, Funko.

Yeah, I’m super stoked about the Goonies, Back to the Future, Escape From New York and the horror figures. It’s like they were watching those ebay auctions by that one guy that made all the custom figures on vintage style cardbacks and said, damn we should do that! Wonder if we’ll see lines like V and The Last Star Fighter that almost had Kenner lines…

This is so cool. I love the Alien ReAction figures and I hope this line goes on for a long time. How cool would it be to get a Delorean to go with Doc and Marty too?

And I just started ebaying stuff and saving for a new camera. Now I have to deal with this temptation?! It’s…just..too..much..to..resist..

I gotta see the universal Monsters and other lines before I commit.

I wasn’t expecting much out of these, but when I saw the Rocketeer figure I had to have it! I preorder him along with Crow and the Phantom, but I can see myself easily picking up the BTTF figures, especially if they release a compatible Time Machine.

Can they do a line of these for anything they have a FUNKO license for? I would imagine Star Wars and DC/Marvel are probably off limits… but I’ve noticed they are doing a Nightmare Before Christmas set of ReActions as well??? Sam from Trick R’ Treat is getting an action figure??? How weird would it be to get a Masters of the Universe line or Thundercats? I mean, what licenses has Funko not made POP figures for at this point? Are ANY of those lines up for grabs here?

Pee-Wee Herman. They haven’t made a Pee-Wee Herman, much to my dismay.

While a few of these figures intrigue me, I can’t bring myself to buy them. I can’t contribute to the message that we as collectors are sending to toy manufactures. I.E. that we’re willing to pay top dollar for 1970’s quality figures. Collectors should pursue these sets with great caution. If your wallets say you’re willing to pay the same price for a figure with less articulation than the standard being released today, we’re either all going to be faced with increased costs for better quality ones, or worse, companies that all take a step backwards and do away with excess articulation.

    Damn you, Brian. DAMN. YOU.

I’ll have to now buy all the BTTF figs, all the horror figs AND pretty much all the Universal Monsters figs. You’re right, the card art alone is worth it.

Why has no one ever made Hammer Studios figures? Where’s my Cushing Van Helsing? Or Christopher Lee Dracula? Or Frankenstein? I’d love an Oliver Reed Wolf Man. And this may be me, but a Christopher Lee Rasputin would rock my world. These are the figures that need to be made.

I still haven’t forked over the money for those Bif! Bang! Pow! Six Million Dollar Man figs.

Ugh. My compulsions are detrimental to my bank account.

I’m curious to see the Universal Monster figures in this line. They’re not as appealing to me as the others because they’ve been done numerous times before. Hammer figures would have been a better choice for this line, but the market for them would probably be pretty slim.

I’ve held off on the Six Million Dollar Man figures too because they’re overpriced, but it would be awfully nice to have them alongside these Funko figures. The OCD in me would want to ensure that the cards were identical in size — so conflicted.

I already added all the Back To The Future figures as well as the Rocketeer and The Crow figures to my wish list on Entertainment Earth, a wish list that is pretty long, lol.
