This week’s topic from the League: Saturday Morning Cartoons!

saturday cartoons

This week’s topic was suggested by Poe Ghostal, so send all complaints his way…

—

You’ve been hired to program the ultimate Saturday morning experience for kids across the nation–create your own ideal Saturday morning cartoon schedule.

—

Once you put up a post on your site add a comment below with the URL. Next Monday, I will put up a post here on Cool & Collected with a list of all the contributing blogs. Once that list is posted, if you haven’t already done so, try to incorporate at least three of your fellow League members’ links (but more would be great!) into the article you wrote on your site.

By cross-posting like this, we will help each other out by sending new readers to each other’s sites. Have fun!

(Wondering what the heck this is all about? We’re recruiting for this loose-knit, rag tag crew! Here are the details for joining The League.)

Love this! I tried to create an entire week’s worth of all-time programming for UnderScoopFire once, and gave up when I realized how many great shows I would have had to wedge into the 8-10pm slot each night. This is a great topic!

I’m going to have a tough time with this one because most of the cartoons I watched have sifted out of my memory banks. I might cheat and just put Thundarr the Barbarian on a continuous loop.

I recently re-watched Gargoyles (Disney XD was airing episodes at 4 AM or something) and it was an absolute joy to watch, even better than I remember it being. It’s a show that definitely catered to the older viewer, with incredibly well-plotted arcs that would frequently reference episodes from waaay back. It’s too bad it didn’t find the audience it deserved.

Gargoyles was definitely ahead of its time with story arcs and maintaining an evolving continuity.

Oh this went way too long, and was really hard to whittle down. In the end I settled on 6 hours of viewing pleasure, and another 5 hours of honorable mentions. I am so weak!

I actually felt the need to go back and make some revisions (because I’m like that, I guess) so I could remove the 5 hours of honorable mentions and simply tack on one last hour of viewing pleasure. Now I have one hour dedicated solely to Michael J. Fox (as it should have been in the beginning) and Added Kidd Video to the line-up. I feel… satisfied.

Dammit, each week I plan on taking a break from LEB so I can post a few of my own articles and we keep getting such good subjects I don’t want to take a break.

We did something similar on an earlier episode of Nerd Lunch. I’ll have to think on this.

[…] This week’s assignment from the League is a really fun one (suggested by Poe Ghostal over at PG’s Points of Articulation) that invites the members to program their own dream Saturday morning cartoon line-up.  The SMC programming block is an unfortunately extinct network tradition that was a weekly bit of bliss for kids during the 60s through to the 90s.  With the advent of dedicated 24-hour kid-vid channels like Nickelodeon, Disney and Cartoon Network it became increasingly harder and harder for the big three to compete for the cartoon and kid’s programming market share and over the past 15 years or so Saturday morning has lost its association with 5-6 solid hours of cartoons.
