Book Report — Star Trek: The Art of Juan Ortiz

I may not be the biggest Star Trek fan out there, but I do love movie posters and art based on pop culture, and I was very excited when this new book landed in my mailbox…

Star Trek: The Art of Juan Ortiz is a beautiful, oversized book filled with posters Ortiz developed for every episode of Star Trek the original series. They’re all there: Mirror, Mirror; The Trouble with Tribbles;  Wolf in the Fold; and there are even a few bonus posters in the mix, for a total of 100!

The introductory pages give Ortiz’s biography and show a few of his sketches alongside the finished posters. The index has a blurb about each of the posters, briefly explaining Ortiz’s thought process for each one.

Each poster is given a full page, and I can (unfortunately) see this book being sliced up to make frameable prints for collectors.

All the posters have a retro vibe to them, but their styles are all over the place, making it hard to believe that all of them were rendered by the same artist. Some are pretty amazing, with this “Obsession” poster being one of my personal favorites.

Star Trek: The Art of Juan Ortiz is a must-have for any true Star Trek fan.

I could really see myself getting into this books. I love retro aesthetics and the artist’s process.

I have most of Ortiz’s posters saved in my inspiration files, but if he has a full book out I might be missing more than a thought.
