The Big Flea Market made another appearance in town this weekend, and I went on Saturday rather than my usual Sunday trip, which paid off nicely. There was a PBS crew filming an episode of Market Warriors at the Flea which was pretty cool to see. Somehow this show has flown beneath my radar, and I haven’t caught an episode yet, but I’ll be tuning in now since they filmed an episode on my stomping grounds.
There was a great selection of vintage toys and pop culture for sale from my favorite regular vendors, and I managed to unearth a few treasures from some other booths that had a little bit of everything. Brent Stokes’ booth is always a favorite stop as it is overflowing with great toys…
I was sorely tempted by these Corgi cars, and probably should have bought every single one of them.
A couple of neat toys from the Voyage to the bottom of the Sea included a Remco submarine and an Aurora model kit.
I thought about picking up this vintage Star Trek Super Phaser game for a Star Trek fan I know, but my cash was used up on this guy…
Whoah. I found this awesome King Kong figure in Mitch M.’s booth and I knew it would be coming home with me before even looking at the price tag. I honestly had no idea what the figure was from, but once I saw it was stamped with a Mego trademark and Dino DeLaurentiis’ name, it just got better. Here’s a commercial for the original game that this figure was from…
Now I need to find the rest of that set! This set is pretty rare and you can imagine that many of these guys ended up cracked on the floor of some trigger-happy kids. I honestly don’t know how I have never seen this King Kong before. I have a running eBay search for “King Kong 197*” toys, but it has never popped up. Unexpected finds like this make it so much fun to be a collector, and like I told Mitch, he made this collector very, very happy.
Of course I found more fun stuff, but I’ll save that for the next post. Stay tuned!
Whoa! Too sweet Brian congrats on the score buddy.
“Now he’s REALLY mad” 🙂 🙂
What a great find!
My brother and I had that phaser game. Never worked too well.

Funny, a friend of mine found the exact same thing a few years back!
Ha! I actually used that article to help me identify this guy.

On a side note, as a kid I had the King Kong model set where he’s standing atop the World Trade Center. I’ve thought about tracking it down again, but now it seems kind of morbid somehow.
It certainly could be a sad reminder, but I’ve been on the lookout for one of those kits for a while. It’s one of the other few Mego items from the movie.
Oh man, I would have jumped over the counter to get at that Back To The Future set as well as those Bonds.
Yeah, I don’t really go for the newer stuff at these shows, but that DeLorean was sorely tempting. I might need to plan on bringing the cash for that to the next show.
That King Kong I just found out is a Model kit. He is fighting the giant snake in it. Why has this not been reproed is beyond me…
