Cool and Collected

Collecting pop culture toys, comics, and collectibles collections

February 4, 2012 By 37 Comments

Your first assignment from “The League”

league of extraordinary bloggers logoThe League of Extraordinary Bloggers, the Pop Culture Pundits, The Knights of the Pop Culture Roundtable… ย whatever we choose to call this great experiment, we’re going to have a good time!

Your first mission, should you choose to accept it:

——

What movie is, or was, your “go to” Saturday matinee — the comfort movie you always popped into the VCR on a rainy Saturday afternoon, the movie you watched over and over again, driving your parents crazy while you recited the lines along with the characters on the screen?

——

Once you put up a post on your site, drop me an email or DM, or add a comment below with the URL. Next Monday, I will put up a post here on Cool & Collected with a list of all the contributing blogs. Once that list is posted, try to incorporate at least three of those links (but more would be great!) into the article you wrote on your site.

By cross-pollinating like this, we should all see a nice bump in our readership. Have fun everyone!

(Wondering what the heck this is all about? We’re recruiting for this loose-knit, rag tag crew! Here are the details for joining The League.)

I begins and ends with ‘The Golden Voyage Of Sinbad’. I can recite it from memory. John Phillip Law and Caroline Munro are fantastic as are all the memorable Harryhausan effects.. I still watch it at least once a month. And remember – “Trust in Allah, but tie up your camel”.

Good one! I remember many Saturday afternoons being spent watching the skeletons fight in Jason and the Argonauts. Love those Harryhausen flicks.

I actually have an idea inspite of being Vcr deprived as a child.

Hope to have mine written and posted by tomorrow night.

Hey Charles, feel free to interpret this week’s topic and all future topics with as much leeway and creativity that you can muster. Some topics will be a perfect match for your site and others might not even be close. Just have fun with it!

I didn’t have a lot of VHS tapes as I was growing up, I aquired more and more but in my early years my go to movies were “Star Wars” and “The Goonies” Anyone who has seen my flickr page knows I love to do fanart from the 80s, especially these two movies! Anyways, my post is about “The Goonies” and I just put it up:

I may want to be in on these assignments, but I’m a bit backlogged right now. So i”m going to have to pass on this first one. But 2 of my go to movies are Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure and The Goonies(I can recite both movies word for word. Been able to do that since ’85-’86). I was out of work sick(with the flu) for 3 days a week and a half ago, and I watched both of these movies. Encino Man was on one of those days as well, but it was on cable. Still a good movie though.

Excellent choices, Jason. Make sure to check out Chris’ memories of Goonies. Something tells me that one might get a few more nods.

A true classic, Charles! I am having a blast seeing these entries flowing in.

Over the weekend, I’ll either send out an email or put up a post with a list of all the blogs that will be participating. Thanks for helping to spread the word–the more of us that do that, the better it will be for us all.

An excellent choice! I was “THIS” close to picking Red Dawn for mine, but another 80’s gem barely nudged it aside. Great article Shawn!

[…] The first assignment has been sent out and it concerns a go-to, Saturday afternoon comfort movie from our childhood that we watched a bunch on TV or VHS.  I took in a metric ton of movies on Saturday afternoons, both on cable and on our local Fox affiliate back in the 80s, and at first I wanted to pick something really obscure that might be a hidden gem for those who missed it back in the day.  Something like The Million Dollar Mystery with Tom Bosley, Eddie Deezen, and Rick Overton, or The Heist with Pierce Brosnan and Tom Skerritt.  I also considered talking about Near Dark as it’s one of my favorite films as both a kid and an adult.  But no matter how many times I find myself browsing my nostalgia DVD shelf, I always come back to the same film.  It was something I watched countless times on HBO, and was one of four films (including Rad, The Monster Squad and Transformers the Movie) that I religiously rented from video stores every weekend.  Most importantly, it’s a film that I never tire of and one that I’ve never discussed on Branded before. That film is Red Dawn. […]
