I was settling in to finally watch Godzilla the other night, when I heard an unfamiliar sound — splat, splat, splat. My cave is always filled with strange new sights, but rarely strange new sounds, so I went to investigate and found one of the ceiling lights had water dripping from it.
Let me tell you, nothing will get the heart rate of a collector going faster than the knowledge that something is about to destroy all of his possessions. I’m no stranger to water leaks — water is my sworn enemy — but I have never moved so fast to protect the affected area as I did that night, yelling for buckets, towels, tarps! Honestly, the leak was very slow and very minor, but I was convinced the ceiling was about to cave in with my son riding in the tub from the bathroom directly above.
The good news is that the leak was fairly easy to fix, and there was no damage other than that done to my psyche. I have been meaning to refocus my display shelves and this is the perfect time, since most of the items were thrown into boxes and bins before the plumber arrived.
Now, I’m left with the decision of how to display the items. I know I will pack up the 80’s toys and focus more on vintage super heroes, but do I mix them up or separate them by character? Batman will have his own cabinets all to himself since that collection is my pride and joy, but Superman, Spiderman, Hulk, Green Hornet, Wonder Woman — they will all have to play nice together somehow.
Rearranging my collection is one of my favorite things to do, so I’ll enjoy using these lemons to make some lemonade. Stay tuned and I’ll post pictures of the final result.

Oh, I was really worried when I first saw the headline to this piece. I know how water damage can ruin a collection and I’m so glad your stuff came out of this ok!

Ugh I’d rather have a problem from above than one like my basement which occasionally gets water. At least “from above” sounds like it would be an easier fix.

Water in a basements is no joke. Leaky pipes are much easier to fix than porous walls and floors.

Dude! Don’t do that! Like T-Raz, I had a panic attack when I saw the headline and the tarp. Glad everything is ok. My wife is an insurance agent. She made sure my high dollar items were insured.
Brian says
Sorry ’bout that. I might need to give your wife a call about an insurance rider. 😉

Wow! That was a close one Brian so lucky no damage was done.
