This weekend, Old Town Auctions is hosting a 3-day toy collector auction at the Grand Venice Hotel in Hagerstown, Maryland, but don’t worry if you can’t make it in person, because they offer online bidding prior to the event.
I was fortunate to attend a space toy auction put on by old Town Auctions last year and was absolutely blown away by the items that Matt Protos had assembled. It look likes he’s done it again with this latest auction, which features many toys: everything from wind-ups, battery ops, erector sets, pressed steel vehicles, diecast & Matchboxes, Promo Cars and much more.
The Sunday session is what grabbed my attention, since it is primarily movie/television related toys, posters, and collectible figures. There is also quite a bit of original artwork by Horror/Fantasy artist Daniel Horne, plus other illustration art pieces.
Here are some of my favorite items that are up for bid…
VINTAGE MARX 1968 THOR WIND-UP (est. $50-100)
VINTAGE BATMAN CERAMIC TRINKET BOX (est. $175-225)
SET OF 6 MARX UNIVERSAL MONSTERS (est. $150-200)
MARX INTERNATIONAL SECRET AGENT WEAPONS SET (est. $100-200) – Remember when toys were fun–and lethal?
MARX MECHANICAL GORILLA – ORIGINAL BOX (est. $100-150) — Be aware, I will punch you in the nose if you outbid me on this guy!
Like I mentioned, the auction is so large, it has been split up into three days:
- Friday’s sale will have toys – some wind-ups, pressed steel, battery ops, Black Americana, Breyer Horses, Britains & lead soldiers, etc.
- Saturday’s sale will have lots of vehicle-related toys: diecast, pressed steel, promo cars, boats, bb guns and cap guns, erector sets and building sets, slot cars and sets, and more. Saturday’s items start with lot 300 in the online catalog.
- Sunday’s sale will have monster toys (both vintage and more contemporary), Movie related action figures and collectible figures, store displays, spy toys (James Bond and others), The Nightmare Before Christmas toys and figures, The Simpsons toys and collectibles, Vintage Apple Computers, I Love Lucy and Lucille Ball collection, Horror Movie scream queen collectibles and autographs, original horror movie/fantasy art work by Daniel Horne and other artists, and Pez dispensers and displays. Sunday’s items start with lot 1001 in the online catalog.
All three days will start by selling roughly 100 lots of uncataloged items (special treat for the folks that make the trip), so if you an make it in person, you have a good chance of scoring some great deals. If you decide to go, let me know, and maybe I’ll see you there. And remember, if you can’t make it, you can always bid online!

I want to build a secret door in the back of my closet … just so that I can hang that secret agent weapon set on the wall behind it )

Wish I had the extra cash for that batmobile. If they had the Spidey windup toy, I might have walked down to this auction.

Best of luck, and let us know how it turns out!
