Mondo’s latest “Summer of’82” poster design was just released, and it’s pink and groovy…
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan by We Buy Your Kids. Size: 18″x24″ Medium: screenprint. Edition size: 220.
In my opinion, many of the recent Mondo posters have been a little lackluster and it seemed like they might be falling into a bit of a rut, but when they release a poster like this one, my faith is instantly renewed. I’ll take 10 “ho-hum” posters for every one like this. I have never even seen Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (yeah, yeah, yeah) but I desperately want this poster hanging on my wall–that is the sign of greatness.
The creativity and style that went into this design is so much stronger than the “standard” illustrative posters we have been getting from Mondo lately. It’s reminiscent of a band’s gig poster or even one of those bizarro Polish movie posters. The artwork is bold, and really grabs you by the throat–and that pink! Wow, that is going to melt your eyes when you see it in person. Posters like this one are the reason I started collecting Mondo prints–this isn’t your standard Hollywood movie poster.
Not too long ago, Mondo favorite, Tyler Stout, produced this Wrath of Khan poster, and it was as good as any Tyler Stout poster but in my opinion, the new poster by We Buy Your Children is the one that would occupy the coveted wall space in my cave.
Unfortunately, this new Wrath of Khan poster is going to be impossible to buy unless you can make it to the film’s screening in Austin this weekend. It’s not clear if there will be a variant or others available for purchase on Mondo’s site yet. EBay, here I come!
