Cool and Collected

Collecting pop culture toys, comics, and collectibles collections

Highlights from Hakes Auction #219

The latest pop culture auction at Hake’s Americana & Collectibles is in full swing. With five days left to bid, it seems like the prices across the board are still pretty low, without too much bidding going on yet. I’m sure this will change as the bidding starts to close, but right now, there are still some real bargains to be had! There is an enormous selection of prototypes and G.I. Joe concept art that just doesn’t seem to have grabbed any interest yet, while the Superman items and comic books seem to be getting a lot of attention. I’m not sure where all the Batman items are this time — that’s always the first category I search, but the offerings are pretty slim in this particular auction.

As usual, I’ve spent several hours poring over the catalog and all it has to offer, and have come up with a list of some of my favorite items. In no particular order, here goes…

archer-space-peopleArcher “Space People” large boxed set

You know I love these guys, and I get a thrill whenever I see them in their original packaging.

harry-houdini-signed-photo
Harry Houdini signed photo

Wow, talk about the granddaddy of pop culture! A signed photo of Harry Houdini would be the prized item in ANY collection, no matter what aspect of pop culture you collect.

spederman-scooter
Spider-Man Scooter – Boxed Marx friction toy

Don’t laugh. This is the most amazing item in the current Hake’s auction. Don’t believe me? What if I told you the current bid price is already over $1,600.00. Yep. Told you so.

iron-fist-origina-art
Iron Fist Origin Art by Larry Hama

I’m curious to see if the bidding heats up on this original art, knowing that the Netflix Iron Fist series will be coming out soon. Right now, it seems like a bargain at $300 with just one bid.

dungeons-and-dragons-tiamat-figure
Dungeons & Dragons Tiamat dragon figure

Chalk this one up as an item that I never knew existed, but now desperately need to own. I’ve always been a casual fan of the Dungeons & Dragons toys, but never knew this five-headed dragon was part of the line. I want one.

captain-america-serial-republic-movie-poster
Captain America movie serial poster

I love the recent Captain America movies, especially the first one which took place in the 40’s with Captain America’s origin, and this poster from the Republic Serials is so fun, especially when you think of it tying in with the recent movies.

spiderman-puzzle-artSpider-Man puzzle art

I do love superhero puzzles, especially frame tray puzzles, and the opportunity to own the original production art for one of these is always exciting.

captain-marvel-dollCaptain Marvel doll with cape and original tag

This is what you might call a holy grail for super hero collectors. Hake’s has only sold one of these before, and that one was in worse shape and didn’t have the cape, belt, or tag. It sold for $7,729, so there’s no telling how high this one might go.

batman-comic-book-rackBatman comic book rack

Okay, so there is one Batman item in this auction that caught my eye, and man, is it incredible! This wire rack would be the ultimate way to showcase some vintage Batman comics. Current bid price: $888.00!

battlestar-galactica-action-figuresBattlestar Galactica action figures

As a child of the 70s and 80’s, this line of action figures was always part of my play time, with the figures playing harmoniously with Luke and Leia. I’d love this set of figures for my collection. They’re a heck of lot more affordable than carded Star Wars figures!

This list could go on and on — there is so much great stuff in the Hake’s auction that it’s always hard to decide on just a few favorites, but there you have it. If you’ve had a chance to browse the auction, what are some of the items that caught your eye?

Wow, I love the Spiderman Scooter, indeed best of all items. Saw one sell on Yahoo in Japan about a year ago for over 500000 YEN, which is about 4700 USD. Just crazy!

That was quite an epic auction to say the least. I bid on a few items (really wanted the super powers displays) but only ended up winning one lot. Guess I can’t complain 😉
