Many of you already know more about me than I might care to think about, but let me fill in the blanks for those folks who might be new around these parts…
I am a graphic designer, and have run my own home-based design business for the last 18 years — the commute is awesome.
I work side by side with my wife, everyday, all day. That’s right.
I love my job. I love my boss.
I love to travel though I rarely do.
I run a couple of other websites — one is for Washington, DC tourists, and the other is a fairly popular site for parents.
I hit the big 4-0 last year, but I’ve never been one to really focus on my, or anyone else’s age that much.
I love old things, old places, and old people.
I think that wisdom actually does come with age, and all my many, many years have surely added up to something. Right?
I love blockbuster movies — the bigger and louder the better. (Suspend disbelief people, it’s a movie!)
I think the 80’s was the last decade where people shared experiences on a massive level — which is what makes us awesome.
I feel sorry for children of the 90’s and especially those millenials.
I truly feel sorry for Billy Ray Cyrus.
I like stupid things, but can’t tolerate stupid people.
I think Ben Affleck will be fine as Batman.
I tend to steer clear of controversy, because I don’t want to say anything that would prevent me from being elected president one day.
I believe that youth really is wasted on the young.
I drive a minivan — and think it’s the greatest thing ever.
I find pregnant women to be incredibly attractive.
I don’t think you can understand kids until you have your own — being a dad is the best thing in the world.
I worry about my kids’ future more than my own.
I think this country has some serious issues and just don’t see things getting better anytime soon.
I fear the day that the internet dies.
I used to be an optimist.
I think creative and talented people are awesome.
I believe that amazing things can be accomplished when like-minded individuals get together.
I will soon be publishing my very own magazine. That’s right.

So that’s a little train of thought about me, but I’m not the only one making introductions this week. Check out Monster Cafe, Space for Rent, the Holidaze, Stunt Zombie, Boo Bobby, and more!

I agree with most of what you just said. I fear for the country too.
Brian says
Wait, you’re in Mexico. π

How did I not know of Funology, let alone your connection to it? As a stay at home dad that one should have been in my bookmarks long ago!
Charles Raymond says
although, I do have to say I think it should be PARENTS with young children in the title not MOMS! π
Brian says
Agreed, but the SEO experts think “Moms” are more attractive. π
Brian says
Thanks Charles! I try not to cross the streams too often, but every now and then it seems appropriate to mention the other sites. π
Tommy says
Great post! I need to get in on the fun this week. And congrats on the 18 years of self-employment, that’s incredible! I’m about to hit four years myself and I hope I can make it that long.
And I’m glad to hear the magazine is still happening, let me know if you need help with anything!
Brian says
Awesome! We should really get together on some web projects Tommy. I’ve been pulling my hair out over website css and php lately.

Sounds like you and I have more in common than I ever would have expected. A lot of these lines some like things I have said at one time or another. I was not aware you had a graphic design business. Took a trip to the web site, looks like you’ve worked on some really neat projects.
I greatly appreciate your sympathy for my generation, especially after reading many news articles this past week that boiled down to “things aren’t they way the used to be and these kids aren’t measuring up, but we’re not going to provide any tips on they could be improved!” *sigh*
Brian says
Don’t give up hope Erik! π
The Goodwill Geek says
Oh my Gods… the internet might go away some day?
Brian, you are still water running VERY deep. And there are some dark, cold currents under there my friend.
Great introduction though. We’re about six years apart you and I, but I see a lot of the same nostalgia going on, a lot of the same interests. Can’t WAIT to see how the magazine goes.
Brian says
Maybe I need to stop watching Doomsday Preppers. π
Laura says
I proudly drive a minivan, as well. Kudos!
Aside from that, you’re way more interesting and accomplished for sure π
You had me laughin at your condolences towards 90’s and millenial kids. And then Erik the Illustrator had me rollin with his comment about it. Ouch! You guys are funny.
There’s a lot more to Cool & Collected than I’ve seen so I guess I’ll get familiar with ya’lls site. π
Rich (Nerd Nook) says
I laughed out loud at that president fact!
Miss M says
This was nice to read Brian! I am with you about old people. I used to work at a nursing home many moons ago and I loved just talking to the residents and listening to their stories. I hope your Friday and weekend will be awesome!

Hey leave us Millennials alone we are having a hard enough go at it π
Great post and I relate to a lot of it (design, pessimism, 80’s, old stuffs) and simply wish I could work from home, stuck workin for the man right now but freelance is getting bigger. About to have my first kid and the little mention about having kids actually made me feel a bit better about everything, so thanks!
Brian says
Congratulations Cody! There’s nothing better than that moment when you first get to meet your new baby. Kids are definitely a lot of work, but totally worth it.

“I like stupid things, but canβt tolerate stupid people.” Simply great.
Anyone who works doing something he/she loves must be considered the most successful person on Earth π
Instead of fearing when Internet dies, I fear when plastic becomes an extremely expensive material because of natural resources scarcity. Many amazing things (from electronics to better clothing, from tools and medical equipment to toys… specially toys) are made of plastic. Plastic is a fantastic material: no bacteria degrades it, resists radiation, rusting, fire and electrical current. It is also an electric isolator, hermetic layer, heat insulator and fire retardant.
ΒΏWhat will we do when plastic becames from almost free to very expensive? ΒΏWill we surviveeee???
I’m scared π
Brian says
Great, now I have that to worry about too. π
Yelinna says
Wait; I didn’t talked when all expoitable industrial minerals (cupper, gold, iron…) will become scarce too!! And when the nearest space around Earth beomes so populated with spatial trash that telecomunications will become impossible (end of Internet!!), and when an asteroid…
I think I must stop π

“I truly feel sorry for Billy Ray Cyrus”……a big LOL from me today. Thanks Brian!
I’m inspired to do the same over at my page. Will get the link posted over here once I’m done with it….that is if you don’t mind… =)
Brian says
Do it! Send me the link when it’s up and I’ll add it to this week’s list.

Done Brian!
