Yard Sale Haul – Video Game Swag and more!

Well, I had fun on Saturday morning…

yard sale haul - video game posters and swag

I always search Craigslist for nearby yard sales and this week one particular listing caught my eye. It mentioned lots of video game swag. Well, I love swag! So, I targeted that house first, and I’m glad I did. The seller was a really nice guy who used to own a Game Crazy store that is no longer in business, and he had a ton of promotional items and some older video game gear that got my heart rate going.

I arrived at 8:00am and had the place to myself but by 8:10 it was swarming with people, probably 20 other people showed up, but I had first dibs, and I cherry picked as fast as I could. I found some pretty sweet items, such as these posters for $2 each…

…and these Sega CD games still in their original shrinkwrap. They were $10 each, but I will never pass up vintage items that are still sealed. (Plus, it’s Dragon’s Lair for crying out loud!)

I also got this neat vintage Nintendo Donkey Kong Hockey handheld game for $10.

And look, LEGO Batman minifig keychains! A great deal for a buck.

This guy (I wish I could remember his name) had some fun items. I told him that going through his boxes was like looking in my bedroom closet back in 1985. He sold me these Britains soldiers for $2 and I was very tempted by a leather Poison jacket he had custom made back in the day, but what would I do with that? (Man, why didn’t I get that jacket! LOL.)

After blowing my wad at the first stop, I hit a bunch of other sales and found some more fun stuff, including a Teddy Ruxpin doll which I only bought because I just listened to the Retroist podcast on the Teddy Ruxpin mythos last week. It was $5 and came with three tapes so I should be able to make a little profit on it.

Okay, who’s up for some shots out of Freddy Krueger’s head? Seriously, the first person who wants them gets them (Add a comment below). Those things give me the creeps. I found a few Takara GoBots, a bendable Hulk Hogan, a GI Joe figure, and a Fisher Price alien figure…

… and then I found this cute fellow. At first I thought it was a cave troll from the Lord of the Rings but it’s actually Jabba’s Rancor beast from Star Wars. This guy is big, and ugly–two of my favorite qualities in a toy, and he was mine for $5.

Anyone want to identify this transforming dragon robot, or that purple guy in the back? Hey look, I found another King Kong, and it roars!

Here’s a Darth Vader playset and a mug along with a Cap’n Crunch cereal promo toy (you have to look through all those boxes, kids! There’s gold at the bottom.)

This was an incredibly fun day for me. As you may know, I collect movie posters, so finding all those video game posters was pretty great. They’re not too hot of a commodity these days, but I’m willing to store these and wait to see if they become a “collectible of tomorrow.”

So, that’s how I did. How did you do this weekend? And who wants to do some shots?

I used to LOVE that Fisher Price alien. I got him and his ship for my 4th birthday. I wonder whatever happened to them…

There’s a market for those old Fisher Price Adventure People. I remember playing with them when I was a kid, until GI Joe came around. I still have a helicopter from the line that my kids play with now. Those toys were indestructible.

Okay the “Gobot” isn’t a Gobot at all. It’s a mail away Transformer. Part of Reflector. The 3 of them combine to make a camera. The black jet is Air Raid an Aerialbot a combiner that forms Superion. I’m not totally sure I can identify the car. It sort of looks like a Protectobot named Streetwise who combines to make Defensor, but then he sort of doesn’t. Does he have a date stamp on him and is he also Takara? I really like the Rancor and King Kong as well as the Captain Crunch toy. What’s inside the Vader head? The GI Joe is a Cobra Royal Guard.

Thanks Russ! I’m so glad I have you to identify these guys for me. Transformers are clearly not my thing! The small grey car says Hasbro Takara 1988, and it’s plastic and transforms into a little blue and grey robot with a gold face.

That Darth Vader head is a Galoob Micro Machines playset from 1994. There’s a good picture of it over on Eclectorama’s site: http://eclectorama.blogspot.com/2009/07/vader-invasion-day-2.html

(The one I got is no where near as nice condition-wise, but it still looks good on the outside.)

The small gray car is a Transformer Micromaster, fairly common back in the day but not so much these days. The Green dragon Transformer is Transmetal Megatron from Beast Wars, but I have never seen it green like that -would love it 🙂

The dragon appears to be a Transformers Beast Wars Transmetals 2 Megatron, but with completely different coloring than usual.

Thanks BJB. It does look similar but you’re right that the colors are different. It gives me a good place to start, though!

I need to get some batteries into him and see if his mouth and eyes move, since that will make a big difference in the price. I’ll let you know what I find out.

Will do John! I’m going to fire it up and play a few rounds but it will probably go up for sale at some point. I’ll let you know.

BTW- I tend to look for older stuff –Batman and Superman items from the 60’s, Planet of the Apes, King Kong, space toys — so if you come across anything like that, I’m always up for a trade!

Hey Brian This Is the Guy from the yard sale on saturday that sold you all the video game swag, Im glad you liked the stuff you got. I ended up selling a ton more after you left. Good thing you got there first because a couple of other people showed up just for the swag I listed on craigslist. I actually found a whole other box of posters that i forgot about, I will be going through them on saturday and will try to make a list up. I did realize that i have 2 other Halo posters. One is a huge banner that went across the whole store front (its huge). and another for Halo wars that we would cling to the store front, but this one was never used.
    Thanks again
    Jason

Hey Jason, thanks again for all the great stuff! I had more fun at your yard sale than I’ve had in a long time. I’d love to see the list of posters you come up with. My email address is on the card I left with you.

I read in the newspaper that there would be a bunch of Star Wars toys in the original packages at a lawn sale today. I got up super early and flew over there but they were gone. The newspaper advertised that the sale would start at 7am. I thought I was being clever by showing up at 6:45 but I guess people were there from 6am. 🙁 Anyway, I did get a couple of neat things. I got this Little People Farm Set http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=532138&s=7 and a box full of vintage cameras http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=1r9s2v&s=7 (sorry the picture was a little unfocused ironically.) All for $40

Those SW figures were probably gone the day they were mentioned in the paper. Too bad you missed out n them. I couldn’t get your pictures to load but they sound pretty good. I have a small collection of old box cameras myself and really love those things.

There weren’t any sales around here this morning do the heat wave but I did manage to spend too much money at a big antique show that comes to town a few times a year. I’ll put up a post by Monday.

Well damn, I missed out on shots out of Freddy’s head. I’d be up for it, I love me some horror flicks 😉 And shots!

Incredible haul of pop culture, I love the posters and the Dragon’s Lair game! That game is so damn beautiful.

I need to make a Friday habit of checking Craigslist for free/yard sales/estate sales, but I never do it!
