Yard Sale Haul — The Robot Invasion!

With the summer heat in full effect, not many people felt like dragging their stuff out on the lawn and sitting in the sun for six hours while strangers picked through it, but for those that did, I salute you. After taking last weekend off, I was itching to hit the yard sales this weekend, and managed to find some fun items. Here’s what you can get for $7.00 on a good day:

yard sale haul -- robots

I got another WowWee Robosapien robot–this is the first model — and that thing accounted for five of the seven dollars spent!

We hit a house around 10:00AM and I think the heat had taken its toll on the seller. She saw my kids and I loading up a box of toys, including some Star Wars figures, Bartman, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and that fun Rescue Heroes robot, among a lot of other things, and she said to just take it, since we would be doing her a favor. Now, that’s my kind of seller! My kids got a huge lot of Rescue Hero figures and vehicles, so they were pretty stoked.

Side note: My kids have learned that yard sales rock! They now have certain items they look for, which include Pokรฉmon, Rescue Heroes, and monster trucks. Every week is like Christmas for them. If you’re a parent and don’t buy toys at yard sales, you’re missing out. That big remote controlled Rescue Hero robot is possibly the most fun toy we have found all summer!

yard sale haul -- lego minifigs

I finally found some LEGO minifigs — nothing too exciting, but I have been skunked on the LEGO front so far this year. I also really dig that sparking dinosaur, and those Star Wars figures still had their guns rubber banded to the hands. Not bad!

yard sale finds - iron giant bank

Get a load of this guy! This is a really neat Iron Giant mechanical bank. You put a coin in his hand, hit a button, and the robot raises his hand and deposits the coin into his mouth while saying lines from the movie. I love this thing, and when the seller said it was just two dollars, I had a tough time playing it straight. The Iron Giant has a huge cult following and this will be an easy $40-50 if I decide to put it in my shop. Yes, I said “IF.”

So, I had a pretty fun outing this time around. How about you? Any mega scores this week?

This has been the Summer of Rescue Heroes, as far as yard sales are concerned. I went to a sale a month ago that was all Rescue Heroes, including the Aircraft Carrier, which they only wanted $15 for. I’ve also seen a ton of the stuff at local thrift stores.

I know it! Rescue Heroes are available for pennies, but my kids love them and I think they’re one of the best toys out there for playability. The Rescue Heroes in our house get the torture treatment — sand box, dirt digging, puddle splashing — but they wash right off and live to play another day.

I don’t think they’ll ever be popular as “collectibles” only because they skew towards the younger audience, but I hope I’m wrong. I’d love to see a glass display case filled with these 40 years from now!

Nice! That big base hasn’t made it to our household yet. I kind of hope we don’t come across one, because that thing is huge! ๐Ÿ˜‰

My family and I have had 2 Resuce Heroes aircraft carriers so far, and we must have passed on at least 4 more over the last 2 years (at the NJ rummage sale scene). i just donated our RH base to a church group this week. Time to get another one for the outside toybox.

Iron Giant! Reptar! Robosapian! I have the Robosapian but don’t use him, requires too many batteries. I love the Iron Giant Movie and wish I had that toy! A rare find, definitely one you should keep instead of sell because of the movie’s cult status.

Funny thing, I encountered that Bart Man at the thrift store, I thought of your “pick up anything pop culture, could be valuable” advice, but put it back because it was a 2000 era toy made to promote the movie, probably. Figured I have too much to resell as is ๐Ÿ˜‰

Probably a smart move on leaving Bartman behind. Plush dolls are a tough sell, but I’m a glutton for punishment. (Plus, it was free!) ๐Ÿ˜‰

You just find the best stuff! It must be your mutant power and no Lego Batman this time either lol. Awesome as always. : )

Thanks, John, but if that’s my mutant power, I think I got shafted. ๐Ÿ˜‰
