Mondo will be selling this Jurassic Park print on their site tomorrow and if they last more than four minutes, they will be deemed a failure. I think this poster has some insanely great elements but as a whole, it fails for me. I love Aaron Horkey’s illustrative style, and his lettering skills are unmatched. His Pan’s Labyrinth and True Grit prints were a perfect fit for his unique touch, but for Jurassic Park, I don’t think it really works. If the movie took place in the Art Nouveau era, this poster design would be perfect, but it’s a modern movie set in modern times. The design is a tad too stylized for my liking.
It’s weird because I think the top lettering and the bottom sections are amazing, just not for this movie. I think the dinosaur is the weakest part of the print and am just glad there aren’t giant gonads swinging around. It’s certainly an awkward angle. I don’t know, I’m conflicted. I really want to like this poster. I love parts of this but for the wrong reasons. Tell me why I’m misguided.
Now, here’s a poster I will be trying to score…
Tom Whalen hit one out of the park with this Monsters, Inc. poster. I haven’t been buying the Disney prints but I think i may go all in for this new Pixar series. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for this series.
I hate to bash a Mondo print, but I give them so much love, it’s only fair that they might slip a little every now and then. What do you think. Will you be shelling out the bucks for either of these posters tomorrow?

I agree on the Jurassic Park poster. I think it’s a cool poster but it just doesn’t feel right to me. I don’t think Jurassic Park when I look at it.
The Monsters, Inc. poster, on the other hand, is awesome. If I wasn’t going to be in the middle of the woods when it goes on sale I would totally be going for it. Can’t wait to see the other posters in the Pixar series!

Yeah, I can’t wait to see “The Incredibles.” One of my all-time faves.

I like the JP poster but yea it’s not perfect. As for the Monsters Inc. i completely forgot about this drop and missed out entirely. I like many others are awaiting a Toy Story drop.
On a kinda sorta related topic, did you see the Gallery 1988 Garbage Pail Kids show? I was there last night and if you liked GPK’s as a kid this was a must.
Brian says
Hey Frank –
I saw some of the highlights for the Gallery 1988 GPK show, but unfortunately am on the wrong coast. If you took some pictures, I’d love to put them up on the site.

Yea I took a bunch of pics. I’m not a professional but they are decent. Let me know where to send them and I’ll get on it.
Brian says
I sent you an email, Frank. Thanks!

Tom Whalen is a local Philly guy, and I’ve bought a good deal of his prints over the years and I have a couple originals as well. He’s a great guy and a tremendous talent, I’m glad to see he’s having the success that he deserves.
Brian says
Agreed! I’m a huge fan of his illustrating style and have high hopes for this Pixar series. He did a poster with King Kong and Godzilla which was pretty great, and I also love his War of the Worlds print.

Brian I have to disagree. Mondo makes stylized posters for other modern movies with the same throwback styling and they work. They’ve even created modern looking posters for retro movies and those work. And for me, this does too. I love that Jurassic Park poster. It’s fantastic.
