Saturday morning was dark and stormy, but that didn’t stop me from from trying to find a yard sale or two. The sales were sparse and many of the people who had advertised, got scared off by the impending doom that the dark clouds were threatening.
At a church sale I visited, only two people showed up. One of them had these strange sports figures for sale. I had no idea what they were, but strange is usually good, so I bought the set for a buck. After a quick eBay search, I learned that they are “Sports Freaks” figures from HG Toys, produced in 1986. They remind me of the old Marx Nutty Mads, but these guys are solid vinyl and HEAVY.
At the same sale, I bought an old Hangman board game. I really should have left that one behind, but Vincent Price!
This was my favorite find of the day. A 1979 Superman Mix and Match storybook. this one will go one the Superman shelf for sure.
Probably the best items I found on Saturday were not related to pop culture at all. These two chairs are awesome! They will look so groovy in my man cave when I expand it to include a full bar (wishful thinking!). I bought both of these two vintage Krueger chairs for just $15! it will probably cost me that much just to find a replacement for the one missing caster!
Anyone else have better weather and better luck at the yard sales this weekend?

Virginia is filled with cowards! Most of the sales soldiered on in my neck of the woods. I made a point to look for the ones labeled as “rain or shine”, but I started earlier enough that I hit a few before the clouds gathered. My haul is to come tomorrow!

You know how we are with the weather — just look what happens when a snowflake hits the ground — CHAOS!!!
Can’t wait to see your haul!

Hmmmm. I remember having a (metal) lunch box when I was a kid that had these Garbage Pail Kids type baseball cards all over them. Actual sports players but looking all messed up. I’ve been searching for years for it just to know what the heck it was but to no luck. Those Sports Freaks figures are the closest thing I’ve ever seen. You’ve inspired a new search Brian.
Brian says
It could be, but I’ve never heard of them. You might ask Shawn over at Branded in the 80’s. He knows everything there is to know about that kind of thing.

They remind me of Mel Appel’s Weird Ball trading cards. They also made figures sorta like these Sports Freaks, and knock-off MUSCLE figures called “Weird Ball Wrestlers”. I have a couple of the wrestlers–they look like a mashup of Madballs and MUSCLE.

I had that Superman book and an Empire Strikes Back one.
Oh yeah, I’d totally snag that Hangman game as long as the cover was in good shape!
Brian says
The Hangman game only set me back a quarter, and I figure it’s worth at least twice that. 😉

Yes I had the Superman one too….

Love that Superman piece and those chairs are sweet! I found a 1980 Fisher Price tape player at the flea market for $10. Love the design of those things.
Brian says
Nice! I love finding old Fisher Price toys.

You willing to trade or sell those sports figures?
