See when I have a title like that, doesn’t it sound better than, “I got some new toys!”? Anyway, the yard sales fizzled away in the July heat, but that hasn’t stopped me from hunting down some cool pop culture relics without breaking the bank.
Much to my surprise, a good friend of the site, JBoyPacman of Revenge from the Cosmic Ark, sent me a box full of toys the other day. Included were two of the new Captain America figures (that my kids instantly claimed), some mini wrestling figures, a Pac-Man book, a LEGO baseball player and a Megablok Iron Man figure, but my favorite items in the package were the Toxic Crusaders Radiation Ranger figure and the Sectaurs Prince Dargon action figure. I love Sectaurs!
Again, a huge thanks and shoutout to to JBoyPacman!
I hit up the local Borders to see all their great bankruptcy sales. I truly am depressed that the chain is going out of business, since the place has always been a second home to me, but when they charge $35.00 for a book, is there any wonder why they failed? I could have bought that new Game of Thrones book there for 20% off ($27.50), but opted for buying it at Costco for $19.99. I know, that’s the reason they went out of business, but they should have had lower prices! Jeesh.
At the local thrift store, I found two cool board games for $2 each — Dragonology and Shadows Over Camelot. (I already sold that Camelot game for $25.00 on eBay, so I could pay for that book!)
Hammer Films had a quick Twitter contest, and since I live on Tweetdeck during the day, I was able to snag that DVD of the Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll.
Target was having some big clearance sales this weekend and they were unloading a ton of Tron toys. I picked up that large Sam Flynn figure for $10. It was originally sold for $40, but it was obviously overpriced, since there were a dozen of them on the shelf. It actually is a pretty nifty figure that has a face that lights up and talks, kind of like a mini projector is in his helmet.
The last item of the week is my favorite — an E.T. alarm clock I got on eBay. The clock works, but unfortunately the alarm mechanism is busted. I’m hoping I can fix it. He’s supposed to raise his head, stretching his neck, while his chest and finger light up. Man, I hope I can get it working. And check out the moobs on E.T. — I challenge you to unsee those, now that I mentioned them! This was a great last-minute snipe on eBay for $6.00.
Speaking of fixing things, remember that Teddy Ruxpin doll I picked up at a yard sale a few weeks ago? well, it didn’t work after all. The battery compartment was corroded and his face was broken in four places, but I was able to fix it with some filing, gluing, and sewing, so that he lives again to tell his tales.
I can’t wait for this heatwave to go away so I can get back out to the yard sales. Anyone else pick up anything cool lately?

Brian says
Thanks, John! To be honest, it’s been years since I’ve watched a Hammer movie, but I’m looking forward to watching this one.

That E.T. clock is AWESOME! I too collect the M.U.S.C.L.E. toys and have a few really interesting pieces in my collection. I’ve got a 28 piece box set opened but with the original box, the wrestling ring, and about 200 or so figures. I can’t get over the price of this stuff on ebay. For whatever reason, they would be super costly to collect seriously. I’m on the look out for one of the clear garbage pails that some of the sets were sold in. If you spot one, grab it and add it to your permanent collection because they’re hard to come by!
Brian says
Nice! I have a few M.U.S.C.L.E.s and have always looked for them, but darned if I can find them anywhere but on eBay. I think a lot of moms saw these as “disposable” due to their small size.

Jboy sure does send some nice packages, doesn’t he? Awesome scores with Dargon and the Radiation Ranger(that’s the first figure from that Toxic Crusader line I am looking to add to my collection. Also the only one I owned as a kid). It looks like you still need some of the original M.U.S.C.L.E. men, huh? Well, if all goes well, let’s just say, keep an eye on the mail box. 🙂
Brian says
Well, that’s certainly a tease! 😉 Thanks Jason. I only have a few of the original M.U.S.C.L.E. figures. The ones JBoyPacman sent are from the 2002 Bandai figures, which are pretty fun little guys, especially the ones that intertwine with each other in the various wrestling holds.

I have an ET Alarm clock that was mine when I was a kid. But the alarm mechanism is also broken. Did you fix yours yet? How did you get him open? Thanks!
Brian says
I ended up selling mine before I had a chance to crack it open.
Jenny Penny says
I just scored an ET CLock exact same one as yours,..can you give me some insight on it’s worth, working, and unworking?
Brian says
Well, I got mine for $6 with the box. I’ve seen these sell in the $20-30 range.
