New Conan the Barbarian movie poster — Not bad!

conan the barbarian movie poster

I might still need some convincing that this new Conan movie isn’t going to be a big steaming pile of dung, but I have to admit that the newest poster makes me feel a little better. At least the artists didn’t just show us a back view of Conan lit from the side, brooding over the eggs he ate for breakfast, like we see on a lot “action” movie posters these days (see Thor). What do you think?

Frank Frazetta's Conan

UPDATE: Twitter friend @Fijimermaid reminded me of this classic Frazetta painting. Look familiar? I guess there are worse things to emulate than Frazetta’s work! I wonder if the movie studio is giving a respectful nod to this work or just ripping it off outright.

You’re right. What a pleasant surprise. An action shot!!

    No crappy one-liners either 😀

Hey, I’m not opposed to crappy one-liners (especially when uttered by an Austrian with a thick accent).

I doubt the studio itself has any idea of the resemblance. I’m sure it will pointed out to them. Decent poster none the less. I’m just so worried about this movie. I REALLY want it to be at least good!

They’re playing to a tough audience. Robert E. Howard fans are vastly different than today’s teenagers that this movie is made for. I fear this is going to look like a Prince of Persia/300 mashup, but I’m with you in hoping that it is good.

I’m still not convinced. The fact that they happened to emulate a Frazetta painting means nothing.

I don’t even consider them remaking Conan a travesty. I don’t think the original is untouchable, it can still be done well. I’m just not sure they did it yet.

One Dude standing on a pile of other dead Dudes is always a good thing, and I am of the opinion that it should be the standard for all movie posters. (could you imagine how much more money “My Dinner with Andre” would have made if the Poster for it was just Vizzini standing atop a pile of dead waiters, axe in hand? – We would have gotten 9 sequels, 2 remakes and a “reimagining” by now)

That being said, I hope this new one turns out well (I was actually looking forward to Kull the Conqueror back when it came out – I was very, very disappointed.) But if not, it won’t take anything away from the Conan I grew up with and loved. I keep it on the DVR and I’ll still watch it 2-3 times per month.

Wow, Chris! I thought I liked the original Conan movie! It was such a great movie, primarily due to the fact that there was almost no CGI and Arnold really did fit the part.
