This week, the League asked what is the sweetest ride cruising the streets of pop culture. For me, this was a no-brainer. The sweetest ride in any movie is Marion Cobretti’s custom 1950 Mercury Monterey from the 1986 movie, Cobra.
“You’re the disease, and I’m the cure.”
When I stayed home from school with the sniffles, the Cobra videotape would invariably end up in the VCR–it always cured me. The movie really isn’t very good, but to my adolescent self it was AWESOME! Cobra is filled with laughably bad lines and violence, but the real star of the movie is the car. This car just shouts “Badass!” and the license plate says it all, “AWSOM 50.”
Another reason to love this car is the story behind it. The Mercury was custom built for Sylvester Stallone’s character in the film and Sly ended up as the owner. In 1994 the car was stolen, only to reappear on the auction block of a company that provided prop cars for movies. After some legal threats last year, Stallone was finally reunited with his baby.
Sadly, in the movie, the Mercury gets destroyed in true Hollywood fashion by crashing through a boat while doing a corkscrew maneuver. Here’s a link to a video of the big chase scene.
If I could have any car in Hollywood history, I can’t think of a sweeter ride to cruise around town in than this bad boy.
