Let the Countdown to Halloween begin! This year on Cool & Collected, I will be showcasing items from my King Kong collection. So, without further delay, I officially declare October 2012 as “KONGTOBER 2012!”
What better way to kick of the annual Halloween celebration than with a vintage Collegeville costume. I’m not sure what genius thought day-glo paint would make for a good gorilla costume, but damn if it doesn’t work!
Collegeville used generic boxes with stickers that showed what costume you were buying.
Okay, so technically this may not be an officially licensed King Kong costume, but come on…
King Kong with chest hair = joy.
This costume is still rockin’ after all these years. I’d wear it.

“Don’t be alarmed, ladies and gentlemen. Those chains are made of chrome steel.” All month long, I will be showing off King Kong collectibles from my personal collection in a series called KONGTOBER, so if you’re a fan of King Kong and movie monsters, I think you’re going to like what you see.

You gotta love Kong’s chest pubes. Pretty sure I saw this in a fever dream one time.

Am I the only one that still thinks it’s pretty cool to have a picture of the character you’re dressing up as on your costume? Still vividly remember my Incredible Hulk smock costume, and all the sweat that formed behind that plastic mask. Oh, and great theme, can’t wait to see your collection!

Nope, you are not alone! It saved a lot of embarassment — “oh, and what are you supposed to be dear?” 😉

Oh and by the way, have you ever seen this Cardboard display playset: http://www.plaidstallions.blogspot.com/2012/10/cardboard-kong.html
Brian says
I had not seen that playset until this morning! That needs to be added to my list. 😉

I love the colors of those old vintage costumes. The trippy green and yellow face just pops out at you and screams “old fashioned Halloween!” I remember the edges of htose masks cutting my face up like razor blades, and the staples holding the rubber bands letting go after a couple of days past Halloween.

I won a Bentwaters (England) USAF base housing costume contest wearing this costume in 1978.
