A local consignment shop recently received a donation from a Monopoly board game collector, which consisted of over 500 games. Well, that was certainly something I had to see…
This photo shows just a fraction of the collection. You name it, there was an -opoly in those stacks for it–colleges, cities, movies, etc. There were three more rows of games behind this one.
With the help of a friendly staff member, I waded through every stack, hoping to find a Batman game. Sadly, Batmanopoly must have been the only version of the Monopoly missing from those stacks, but I did manage to find a few that will fit well in my collection…
Of course I gravitated to the pop culture Monopoly games. I ust love the graphics on these boxes, especially that G.I. Joe one.
After doing some research on eBay, it seems like the consignment shop could do well if they opened the boxes and sold off the pewter playing pieces individually, but who wants to deal with that headache?
Many of the games are fairly worthless, but collectors seem to really enjoy the playing pieces, which can go for $5-10 each!
The amazing thing to me is that all these games are still sealed in their shrinkwrap. I wonder if the original owner ever played Monopoly, or if it was one of those collections that just got out of hand. I can’t imagine having this many board games–you would need an entire room to hold them all.
That is a lot of board games!
I’d probably try for the Batman one as well as the Spiderman or any other Comic monopoly as well as a Beatles one.
I also saw a New York Jets game that would fit into my Jets collection. I’m sure there’s a Yankees one in there somewhere as well.
I think there was a Spiderman one, but no Beatles or Batman. There seemed to be one for every sports team! I may need to go back for another look.
There was a Batman & Robin edition. I know because I have it in my collection of nearly 90 Monopolies…
I guess 500 has me beat!
500+ Monopoly games? That’s borderline hoarding.
Borderline?!
Wow! I have the Nintendo Monopoly, still sealed. My wife got it for me for Christmas a few years ago, but no-one ever wants to play. I also found A Christmas Story edition at an auction(I got a box of board games and a Lego Darth Vader for $5!). That G.I. Joe edition looks pretty sweet. Any chance we can see what the playing pieces look like?
And I will finally post something with the league this week, I promise! The NHL Playoffs start tonight(but the Rangers don’t play their first until tomorrow), so I’ll write it this evening. I’d hate to miss this one.
Jason, there’s a photo above with the GI Joe pieces. It’s so tempting to rip these open, and I think if/when I do, the GI Joe game will be the first one.
I saw that Christmas Story game among the stacks and was tempted, but I had to draw the line somewhere! 😉

I am so Jealous. I have only 30 and I’m runny out of room. I’m guessing you would need at least 3 rooms to hold 500?
