Dino-Riders up for bid at Hake’s

Dino-Riders is one of the most fun toy lines to come out of the 80’s, and that’s saying something! Hake’s Americana has some excellent Dino-Riders items up for bid in their current auction, from the collection of Lee Volpe, Tyco Toy’s Manager, Director, and VP of New Product Development (1982–1994) who was involved from the beginning of the development of Dino-Riders, Garfield telephones and several other Tyco toys.

There are 15 Dino-Riders toys in the auction, and I thought I would showcase a few of my favorites…

dinoriders tyrannosaurus rex

“DINO-RIDERS – TYRANNOSAURUS REX” BOXED BATTERY-OPERATED DINOSAUR TOY WITH ORIGINAL SHIPPING SLEEVE

“Offered here is Tyrannosaurus Rex, the biggest dinosaur toy produced in the first series. Battery-operated, it walks forward and its fearsome jaws open and close. The toy comes w/figures of Krulos (the Rulon leader), Bitor and Cobrus as well as “Full Battle Accessories” that consisted of armor and weapons that could be placed on the dinosaur, effectively turning it into a walking battle station. This toy was the highlight of the first series of toys. Toy comes sealed in its original 14x22x10″ deep box, which in turn remains packaged in its original cardboard shipping sleeve. Sleeve has some writing on it. Box remains Exc. w/contents Mint as sealed.”  (Estimate – $700 to $1000)

dino-riders brontosaurus
“DINO-RIDERS – BRONTOSAURUS” LARGE & IMPRESSIVE BOXED DINOSAUR TOY

“Brontosaurus, the biggest dinosaur toy produced for the entire line. 1989. Originally designed to be a battery-operated toy that walked, came w/more accessories and an additional figure, budget constraints decreed this not feasible. This in no way detracts from the overall impressiveness of the toy, and it comes w/figures of Serena, Ayce and Ion as well as “Full Battle Accessories” that consisted of armor and weapons that could be placed on the dinosaur, effectively turning it into a walking battle station. Toy also comes w/three Rhamphorhynchus pterosaurs figures. This toy was the highlight of the second series of toys. Toy comes sealed in its original 14.75x35x8.75″ deep box. Box has some corner tip wear w/a few creases. VF w/contents Mint as sealed.” (Estimate – $700 to $1000)

dino-riders diplodocus
“DINO-RIDERS – DIPLODOCUS” LARGE & IMPRESSIVE BOXED DINOSAUR TOY

“Diplodocus, the second biggest dinosaur toy produced for the heroic Valorians. Battery-operated, it walks forward and its head and neck sway back and forth. The toy comes w/figures of Questar (the Valorian leader) Mind-Zei and Aries as well as “Full Battle Accessories” that consisted of armor and weapons that could be placed on the dinosaur, effectively turning it into a walking battle station. This toy was the one of the highlights of the first series of toys. 1988. Toy comes sealed in its original 10x22x8″ deep box w/front flap that can be lifted to view contents. Box has tiny traces of corner tip wear, but is Exc. w/contents Mint as sealed.” (Estimate – $200 to $400)

I wanted the T Rex so bad when I was kid. It’s still awesome!

That was my favorite toy when I was age appropriate for it.

Last May I snagged a diplodocus Complete and in sealed bag.I couldn’t resist taking the dino out and putting batteries in it for the first time.It walks like brand new.I’m still debating whether to open up the other bags and display him in full regalia.I know most hardcore collectors are cringing right now but, hey, I waited a long time for one of these. Why have a great toy like this and not enjoy it?

I can’t fault you on this one bit. A toy like this was made to be displayed!

Well,Even if I don’t put on the armor,it still makes a nice display with the window box and all.Either way,it’s a showpiece.Dinosaurs have a way of sneaking among my Kaijueiga collectibles, which also includes western stuff like King Kong & Harryhausen. There’s even some Inhumanoids lurking around!
