Countdown to Halloween — Packaging Roundup 2011 — Part 2

The countdown of Halloween packaging design continues with this entrant from Hershey’s…

halloween hersheys candy bars

There’s not a whole lot to this design, but it’s not too bad. The candy bars inside the Jack-o’lantern is a neat effect, almost as if you’re looking into the bag through a clear window. And Hershey’s gets a few bonus points for the subtle bat pattern on the individual candy bar wrappers.

halloween tootsie ghost dots

Tootsie’s Ghost Dots! This is the candy that every dentist fears, for it will literally pull your teeth right out of your gums. While you might cringe at the thought of eating these, the package design is one of the best! There is a vampire bat design (shown in last year’s report) and a candy corn design as well. I wish that Tootsie had sunk some money into a new design this year, but it just goes to show the lasting effect of good design.

halloween pretzel m & m's

M&M’s always puts a good deal of effort and money into their holiday promotional packaging, probably more than any other candy. This year’s Pretzel M&M’s get the Halloween treatment. I don’t know who the marketing genius was who decided to personify and animate the M&M characters, that person had better be filthy rich and on a yacht somewhere.

halloween M&M's minis

The M&M’s Minis container has some great costumed M&M’s artwork. I wish they used this art on one of the larger bags, because it is really fun.

halloween reeses peanut butter cups

“Reese’s Peanut Butter Pumpkins”–just hearing those words gets me salivating. The package for this is excellent. The design uses my favorite Halloween color scheme — black, purple and orange — you simply can’t go wrong with those colors. If there was a hint of lime green in there, then this would have been the clear winner of the best package design!

So, what is the best Halloween packaging design this year? Got any guesses? Stay tuned..

Yeah that Hershey’s minis package is pretty cool with it’s understated design. Oh and I totally agree about the Ghost Dots. When these came on the scene a few years ago I was knocked down by how well the concept worked. I’ve been clamoring for new variations as well. Can you imagine rootbeer-flavored werewolf dots? Or dark green lime Frankendots? Heck I’d even flip over a gray variation for Frankenstein’s bolt dots…

Tootsie? Are you reading this? Yes, please.

M&Ms always have great holiday packaging. And Ghost Dots are probably some of the greatest Halloween candies ever made.

The M&M guys are great. My kids went to the M&M store in Vegas and NY and actually got my wife to shell out for M&M toys and the most expensive per pound candies ever. Genius.

I like how the orange, worried looking M & M was crispy ten years ago, but has been reborn as Pretzel. They didn’t want to waste the good art when the product failed.
