Countdown to Halloween — 1964 Aurora King Kong models

aurora king kong model kit

One of my absolute favorite items is this 1964 King Kong model by Aurora. These models are readily available on eBay in various stages of construction. Some of them are expertly painted, while others look like a King Kong painted them himself. One of my dreams is to have an entire cabinet with a dozen or more of these models displayed side by side.

I have a couple of these models, one is a well-painted regular issue, and the other is an unpainted, poorly-built glow-in-the-dark model. 45+ years later, and this thing is still glowing strong!

Aurora model kits are so much fun! They look great whether they are pro-built or not.

This Aurora kit was re-released by Polar Lights in 1992 and 2000, and I can’t think of a more fun weekend project than snapping together one of these kits and giving it a custom paint job.

If you have one of these King Kong models collecting dust on a shelf, send me a pic. I love seeing the variety of these guys that is out there in the wild.

I had the reissue Wolfman one that glowed in the dark. I repainted over the glowing plastic in hopes of making it look original. Looked like a green Wolfman.

Ha! Does it still glow slightly through the paint? Could be cool, or it might just look like he ate some bad egg salad. 😉

        They came with two heads.

One to match the body that can be painted and one that is glow in the dark and should not be painted.

Then you can choose which head you want to use. Or you can do what I did and just wedge the head on so ir can be changed whenever you want.

Or you can do what the author did and buy two models and have one of each.
