Todd Sheffer is a graphic designer with a dream job. He works at Hake’s Americana in York, PA, where he is surrounded by pop-culture memorabilia every day. This really is like a kid working in the candy store. I honestly don’t know if I could handle that kind of job, because my entire salary would go towards buying the inventory.
Todd has too many items to count, and he was kind enough to send in some drool-inducing photos of his personal collection.
How did your collection start? What was the first item in your collection?
it all started with my childhood toys and I started serious collecting when the Batman movie came out in 1989.
Do you have a favorite item in your collection?
My favorite item is a 1965 Gilbert James Bond Doll.
How do you store/display your collection?
I have shelves in a special room and numerous boxes that resemble a hoarders house. I expect to be crushed in a collectible avalanche one day.
Is there a “holy grail” item that you would love to add to your collection?
Mego Alter Egos.
Do you collect other things?
I collect comic books and 50’s vintage ceramic dresser valet’s (like the kangaroo in Pulp Fiction), and Akira (anime) items.
Do you have a favorite collecting story or experience?
I went to an auction many years ago and bought a Batman book that contained an original drawing by Bob Kane for $35!
Do you have any advice for new collectors who are just starting a collection?
Pick a direction and stick to it, I collect way too many things. Also vintage items are always a better investment than new toys off the rack. No matter what you buy, buy things that you like.

A special thanks to Todd for sharing some of his treasures. I had to towel the drool off my chin while writing this post, and let me tell you, it ain’t easy typing with one hand!
