Best Halloween Packaging and Advertising for 2010 (part 4)

Here is the final installment for this year’s best Halloween packaging and promotions…

Pillsbury Cookies

I saw these boxes in the freezer section of the grocery store and they were the catalyst for me writing about all these great Halloween packages. I don’t know why these appealed to me so much, but the iconic Pillsbury Doughboy with a simple mask just works really well.

The designers of these packages did a great job of capturing the essence of Halloween, while also managing to highlight the actual product. The rendering of the graphic in the upper left corner that depicts the pattern on the cookies inside is well done, and the background pattern plays off the specific cookie design. Note to designers out there: You can’t go wrong with purple, orange, and dark blue. Throw in a little lime green, and you’re golden.

And the best part was that the cookies were delicious!

McDonald’s Happy Meals

This is probably the most collectible food package out there this year. These containers are fun for the kids, who will have a good time putting together the monster potato heads with the stickers, and then will use the buckets to stash their crayons and rock collections long after the Halloween candy is gone. The colorful packages hit at least three collector groups — those who collect Mr. Potato Head, Halloween, or McDonald’s toys.

I can’t believe how much I love those plastic handles. The skull and Jack ‘o lantern are both playfully spooky, and really well executed. These buckets wouldn’t be half as great without those handles.

For my money, this is THE Halloween item worth seeking out this year.

You might notice a glaring omission from this year’s list: Cap’n Crunch’s Werewolf cereal box. I scoured every store in a 20-mile radius over the last month to find this cereal box, and came up empty. It would certainly have made my list, but if I can’t find it anywhere, does it really even exist? hmmm.

Well, I hope you had as much fun reading about these Halloween food promotions as I had researching (eating) them. My sugar rush is still in full effect, and it should tide me over until I can raid my kids’ Trick or Treat haul on Halloween night. Have fun collecting and I hope you find something great for your collection. Happy Halloween!

The cookie package is very cute! I haven’t seen that one yet. We have the McDonalds buckets and they really are cool. The handles add that extra kick that really sends it over the top. I was so suprised and excited to see McDonalds bring back the Halloween buckets. Very nice.
