A Collection a Day #14 – Superman banks, originally uploaded by Cool and Collected.
I honestly don’t know why I even have any of these but I think I must have been attracted to their weirdness. In the back row is a recent version, based on Brandon Routh from the “Superman Returns” movie. Superman has a “why me” expression while staring up to the heavens, bound in chains. The last I heard, Superman was pretty strong and chains could not hold him.
The middle figure is a mulleted Superman bank from a Six Flags amusement park. I like it when our heroes change with the times, but that haircut never sat well with me.
The bank in the front is a 1987 ceramic bank from Enesco, and it just makes me feel kind of funny. Superman is just too pretty. Look at those lips! Look at that hair! Superman has never been so effeminate.
Have you ever added anything to your collection you didn’t really like on its own, but actually looked pretty good once it was displayed with other items? Or maybe you just had to have something to be a “completist?” On their own, these banks aren’t so hot, but when they join the other items on my Superman shelf, they look pretty darn good.
I have collected so many different things that I thought it would be fun to try and photograph a collection a day and see how far I can get.
