The Breakfast Club: Where are they now?

Have you ever wondered whatever happened to the Jock, the Brain, the Criminal, the Princess and the Basket Case? To be honest, I wouldn’t mind seeing a sequel to any of John Hughes’ movies, but I would love to know what happened to the Breakfast Club. John Hughes is no longer with us, and we’ll probably never see a sequel to this classic, but if there was a movie, here’s how I imagine the characters have spent the last few decades…

It’s 2014, and the former students have returned to Shermer High School for their 30th reunion. During the event, by sheer coincidence, they each find themselves in the library at the same point of the evening, where they tell each other’s stories and the ugliest truths of their lives are revealed.

Andrew, the jock:

After graduating, Andrew got kicked out of college for hazing fraternity pledges. From that point on, his life never really recovered. He had no skills, outside of wrestling, and has recently moved back in with his parents. He currently works on the school’s custodial staff.

Brian, the brain:

During college, Brian stole an innovative idea for a new social networking site and proceeded to make billions in the company’s IPO. He has a history of reckless behavior and has tried just about every form of extreme sports that has been invented. He recently parted ways with the company after an undisclosed incident with an intern. His third trophy wife left him a few days prior to the reunion.

Claire, the princess:

Claire went on to marry a state congressman and has endured a series of very public indiscretions by her husband. She has recently been diagnosed with cancer and has secretly been undergoing treatment.

Allison, the basket case:

Allison moved to New York City and lived the bohemian lifestyle until her art was discovered by a major art dealer. Her “paintings” are made entirely of human hair and bodily fluids. Time magazine recently named her a top emerging American artist.

Bender, the criminal:

Before graduating high school, Bender impregnated a girl and the two eloped. The birth of his first son changed him greatly, and he buckled down and earned a business degree from the local community college. He is a member of the rotary club and a wonderful father to his three kids, coaching soccer on Tuesdays and volunteering at the senior center on Saturdays. Needless to say, Bender is a ticking time bomb.

Principal Vernon passed away in a freak accident in Pamplona, Spain.
Carl, the janitor, is happy to have a new assistant custodian.

“The Dinner Club” would be more serious in tone than the original, more of a black comedy, but life tends to get a little more serious when you get older. Man, writing this blog post made me really feel my age. What do you think happened to the Club?

league of extraordinary bloggers logoThis is the latest post in response to the weekly blog challenge presented by the League of Extraordinary Bloggers. This week’s topic asked what 80’s movie you would like to have a sequel filmed today, where the actors have aged the same as you and me. Check out what the rest of the League chose to write about this week.

Wouldn’t it be great if Hollywood could actually pull off a successful sequel to this movie. It really is almost made for a “Where are they now?” treatment.

TL, I did warn you that great minds think alike. 😉

Nice, Brian. Love the title. I would agree with nearly everything you wrote, except for Andrew. I imagine him to have finished college with a degree in Phys Ed. Maybe ending up as Shermer’s coach of the wrestling team. Or just a PE coach.

    Otherwise, well done.

We apparently share the same brain. I’m about to send you my link to this week’s LXB post and though I ended up going with something different, I spend the first half talking about the Breakfast Club.

It wasn’t until I was a senior in High School did i learn that they smoked pot in that movie. I always watched it on regular tv so they cut that part out.

    I was in awe…lol
